Monica Schmitt

Dr. Schmitt is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 10 years of experience.   She received her undergraduate degree with honors in Psychology from Bradley University. Dr. Schmitt went on to receive her doctorate with honors in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Her clinical training sites have included Hartgrove Hospital, Lake Forest College Counseling Center and Texas Tech University Student Counseling Center.  Dr. Schmitt has completed post-graduate training at the Postpartum Stress Center and through Postpartum Support International.

Dr. Schmitt specializes in maternal mental health with a particular focus on the prevention, assessment and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.  She also works with college students, couples and adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues and difficult life transitions.

Dr. Schmitt’s therapeutic approach is warm, accepting and collaborative. Her style as a therapist encourages a relationship of trust and a sense of safety for her clients. She works with clients to manage symptoms and stressors more effectively, to enhance self-awareness, to discover their inner strength and resilience and to improve self-care.  She empowers and gently encourages her clients to go outside of their comfort zone to find greater understanding and meaning in their lives.  As a clinician, she sees each individual client as a unique person. Given this, she tailors her therapeutic approach to each client’s needs and to each client’s strengths.

Dr. Schmitt is professionally affiliated with the Illinois Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association and Postpartum Support International. She is also a registrant with the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.
